Carlos Cabrera Rivas is CEO and Co-Founder of Sphera Energy, a Chilean developer of solar and battery energy
storage (BESS) projects with a track record spanning more than a decade. Sphera does not build or operate
assets: it develops projects to Ready-to-Build (RTB) stage and transfers them to investors, utilities, and IPPs,
with a geographic focus on central-southern Chile. The company’s trajectory began in PMGD solar PV and
evolved naturally into utility-scale hybrid Solar+BESS and, more recently, standalone BESS development.
Sphera’s hybrid Solar PV + BESS portfolio comprises four projects totaling 750 MWp with five-hour storage,
including Sol de Caone (350 MW), the company’s first hybrid project, sold to Grenergy. Its standalone BESS
portfolio spans seven projects totaling approximately 1.2 GW / 5h, with staged RTB delivery through 2027–
2028 and most assets already holding environmental approval (RCA), secured grid connection, and land control.
Carlos currently leads the development and commercial/financial structuring of a storage portfolio exceeding
1.5 GW in Chile.
His focus is on solving the sector’s core bottleneck (bankability, not permitting) by extending Sphera’s model
beyond RTB to include PPA structuring (tolling agreements, capacity PPAs, and hybrid schemes that convert
merchant assets into contracted cash flow) and financing work with banks, infrastructure funds, and alternative
financiers, pre-arranging capital structure and due diligence ahead of transfer. This approach is underway with
CUVICo (PPA Advisory Chilean boutique Company) across Sphera’s standalone BESS portfolio, including a
live process for Altair/Polaris project, aproximately 3 GWh BESS project engaging international EPC
contractors and infrastructure investors as potential BOOT counterparties.
Carlos is an Electrical Civil Engineer from the University of Santiago de Chile (USACH), completed the PMD
Executive Program at IESE Business School (2025), and brings 20 years of experience in structuring,
commercialization, and business development for generation companies. An expert in electricity regulation and
markets, he taught the subject as a diploma professor at USACH, and has served as President and Past-President
of the Chilean Solar Energy Association (ACESOL)
